Vehicles
Registered Passenger Vehicles: This graph shows the number and distribution of registered passenger vehicles in Lane County by age.
Fuel
Motor Vehicle Fuel Sales in Oregon: Taxable sales within the State are available on-line as posted by ODOT's Fuel Tax Group. Within the commute-shed of the MPO, the cities of Eugene, Springfield, Coburg, Cottage Grove, and Veneta have local fuels taxes and these sales are reported on a monthly basis by ODOT. Usage for the entire State is also reported. Note that on-road fuels use varies seasonally.
Gasoline costs in Oregon: Current prices and historic data are available here. Other data including costs by grade and formulation are available at the US Energy Information Administration. Note that these data do not include local gasoline sales taxes added in certain cities including Eugene, Springfield and Coburg. (As of August 2011: Eugene 5 cents/gallon; Springfield 3 cents/gallon; Coburg 3 cents per gallon on non-diesel. Tax information is available from ODOT).
Gasoline Usage in Central Lane MPO 2003-2011: Gasoline usage from ODOT Fuels tax group has been compiled for the Central Lane area and is shown here. The usage within the 'commute-shed' in this chart refers to sales in the cities of Eugene, Springfield, Coburg, Veneta, and Cottage Grove.
Traffic Volumes and Miles Traveled
Traffic volume: Traffic counts are made by various agencies - the Cities of Eugene and Springfield, Lane County, and ODOT collect traffic counts in the MPO area. These counts are used for planning and project development, and figure into the calculation of miles traveled by vehicles.
Vehicle miles traveled (VMT): VMT is not "measured" but is a statistical or modeled quantity. It is the sum of distances traveled by specified classes of motor vehicles over a specified geography within the specified time period. VMT is calculated by multiplying the average number of vehicles in the desired time period by the length of the road section. These results are summed to calculate total "VMT". Traffic counts from all sources are used together with transportation models to estimate VMT. VMT on state-owned highways is reported by ODOT. National and regional trends are tracked by Federal Highway Administration, utlizing data reported by the States. Oregon monthly data have been extracted from these reports and can be viewed in this graph.
Trends in VMT/Capita: This graph shows the growth in VMT on State-owned highways in Lane County, and compares this growth with County population growth from 1991 through 2009. VMT/capita for Lane County is compared with VMT/capita for Oregon and with the increasing average gasoline cost (not adjusted for inflation). This graph shows the daily VMT in the Eugene-Springfield area compared with other Oregon MPOs and the US National Average.
Crash Analysis and Reporting
Crash data are compiled and reported by ODOT on an annual basis, and include summaries by city and county. The "Safety Investment Program" (SIP) develops a "Safety Priority Index System" (SPIS) which identifies locations on the state highways with high numbers of serious accidents based on the past 3 years of data. This map provides the most recent analysis for the Eugene-Springfield area. Locations that have SPIS ratings of 90-100% (i.e. in the top 10% thorughout the state ) are examined annually by ODOT for analysis and possible corrective action.
The City of Eugene lists crash data at intersections: 2006, 2007. A 10-year summary is also provided.
Pavement Condition
Local governments and the State of Oregon maintain data that describes the condition of their streets. A condition index score is usually generated through inspections, and is used to identify those roads in need of repaving or even reconstruction. This score and the trends revealed enable budget allocations and priorities to be assessed.
The City of Eugene published a report analysing conditions in 2008. Reports and Maps from ODOT can be found here.
Transit Statistics
Quarterly statistics for LTD and other transit agencies can be found here, along with other facts on public transportation. LTD also publishes monthly performance reports.
Census Data
The American Community Survey (ACS) of the US Census Bureau is now providing yearly updates for some population characteristics for geographies above a certain size. For smaller cities and areas, the US Census of 2000 provides the most recent information.
Fact sheets for City of Eugene (2009, ACS), City of Springfield (2007-2009, ACS), Lane County (2009, ACS) and for the Eugene-Springfield Urban Area (2009, ACS) (known in the ACS as "Eugene Urbanized Area", an area approximating the Central Lane MPO area) can be obtained from the US Census Bureau web site (click on the links provided here).
Current and historical data for Lane County and its cities are also available here (Lane Council of Governments web site).
American Community Survey (ACS) -2009
This data set provides transportation statistics for the United States, Oregon, Lane County, Eugene-Springfield Urban Area (known in the ACS as "Eugene Urbanized Area"), City of Eugene, and City of Springfield. The Urbanized Area is approximately the same as the Central Lane MPO area.
